Sawing Firewood
For sawing firewood, you will need to have a "sawhorse" to be safe. These need to be made from approximately 50mm x 75mm timber. Recycled timber can be used provided there's no rot or woodworm. It is a good idea to use a rope vice (see pictures) to hold the log if you are using a chainsaw, still a good idea with a bow saw. The vice is used with a greenwood bar of about 40mm dia. and about 1metre long to use as a foot pedal.
Making the Sawhorse
You will need 12 pieces of timber (this can be recycled timber). Lengths are not too important but the finished sawhorse should be a comfortable height to work on.

My sawhorse was made from recycled timber, the cross frames were stringers from a wooden ladder, while the horizontal and diagonal bars were various suitably sized timbers available. The cross frames are pivoted on bolts where they cross, which makes it possible to close up the sawhorse flat for storage. The two cross frames which are close together are about 15cm apart to hold short lengths.

The Rope Vice
You will need a length of polypropylene rope long enough to tie onto the cross frame under the top horizontal bar, over the log and down to the ground on the near side. The rope is tied to the greenwood bar with half hitches. It can be adjusted by having more or less half hitches on the bar.

Pressure with the foot keeps the rope tight around the log, leaving the hands free.
